What is Ferro Silico Chrome?

Ferro Silico Chrome, also known as silico chromium (FeSiCr), is a ferroalloy composed mainly of silicon (Si) and chromium (Cr) with iron as the balance. It is produced by carbothermic reduction of chromite ore, silica, and coke in electric arc furnaces. Typical composition contains 35–45% silicon and 30–41% chromium, with carbon content as low as 0.02–0.06% in high-grade material.

Key Applications

Low Carbon Ferrochrome Production – Silicochrome serves as the essential reducing agent in the electro-silicothermic process for manufacturing low-carbon, medium-carbon, and micro-carbon ferrochrome. Over 90% of silicochrome production is used for this purpose.
Steelmaking – It is also used directly as a deoxidizer and alloying agent, replacing ferrosilicon while simultaneously adding chromium to the steel melt. Its use can reduce deoxidation time by 5–9 minutes and lower production costs.
