What is Silicon Metal (Metallurgical Silicon)?

Silicon metal is a high-purity industrial material produced by reducing silica (SiO₂) with carbon in electric arc furnaces at temperatures above 1900°C. It is a lustrous, gray semi-metallic solid with a silicon content ranging from 98% to 99.9%.

Key Applications

Aluminum Alloys – The largest consumer of metallurgical silicon, added to aluminum to improve strength, hardness, and castability in automotive components (engine blocks, wheels) and aerospace parts
Silicones Production – Used as the base material for manufacturing silicones, which are found in sealants, lubricants, cookware, and medical devices
Semiconductors – High-purity silicon (99.9999%+) is the foundation of the electronics industry, used in computer chips, solar cells, and transistors
Ferroalloys – Serves as a raw material for producing ferrosilicon and other alloys in steelmaking
Refractories – Used in manufacturing high-temperature ceramic and refractory materials
